Update to the community July 15

Dear VIU community,

It is with a deep sense of disappointment that we report the Palestine Solidarity Encampment (PSE) has ignored the Trespass Notice we issued on July 11, 2024.

It has also come to our attention that the PSE is urging protesters to call two security numbers: 250.753.3812 and 250.740.6512. Please note that these numbers are designated for emergencies only. Tying up these phone lines unnecessarily puts our community at risk in critical situations that demand immediate attention. We kindly request that you refrain from calling these two numbers unless you have a genuine emergency to report. Your cooperation ensures that these lines remain available for urgent incidents that require swift action.

As always, Vancouver Island University remains committed to fostering a safe and inclusive environment for all members of our community. We respect and uphold the right to peaceful protest and expression of diverse viewpoints. However, the encampment’s continued presence on campus, in violation of the Trespass Notice, has necessitated us to take further action to uphold the university’s policies and ensure the safety and well-being of our campus community.

Regrettably, we have retained external counsel and have commenced a court action (a notice of civil claim) in the Supreme Court of British Columbia seeking injunctive relief and damages from the encampment participants. VIU must protect the safety and peace of all persons on campus. The continued presence of the encampment, and encampment members participating in the above prohibited conduct, are now preventing this.

This decision was not made lightly, but it has become necessary to ensure the university can operate effectively and that our campus remains a safe and welcoming place for all. We note that the Ontario Superior Court recently granted such an injunction for the Palestinian Solidarity Encampment at the University of Toronto (University of Toronto Governing Council) v. Doe et al. 2024). The Court’s reasons can be found here.

We understand that this situation has been challenging and deeply emotional for many. We remain committed to supporting our students and employees through this difficult time and continue to encourage constructive and respectful dialogue on all issues affecting our community.

We encourage members of our community to reach out for support if they feel they need it. Supports for students, including counselling, wellness, and information for students in distress, can be found on the VIU Counselling website. Support, counselling, and wellness information for employees can be found on our Employee and Family Assistance Program homepage.

We want to thank the VIU community for their ongoing support and patience during this difficult time.
