University women celebrate $100,000 milestone

June 18, 2008 - 8:02am

One of Vancouver Island University’s longest-established supporters marked a milestone yesterday.

The Nanaimo chapter of the Canadian Federation of University Women celebrated their endowment fund for student scholarships, awards and bursaries passing the $100,000 mark. The fund has been built up with membership dues and fundraising projects.

The club began presenting awards to students in 1972, just after Malaspina College was founded, and has been doing so consistently ever since. In 2001, they began building an endowment fund, and together with matching grants from the province and the university, it has now achieved $109,300, providing awards to students every year.

Vancouver Island University Foundation Chair George Hrabowych and VIU President Dr. Ralph Nilson recently paid tribute to 40 members of the chapter who attended a special reception at VIU. The club's current membership stands at 117.
