VIU employees are known for their generous hearts.
That’s why for the fourth year in a row, VIU President Dr. Ralph Nilson’s office is supporting the United Way Loaned Representative initiative.
VIU Admissions and Registration Assistant Bernie Heise has been ‘loaned’ to United Way Central and Northern Vancouver Island to assist with the annual fundraising campaign until December.
Starting today (Oct. 18), Heise is launching a workplace campaign at VIU's Nanaimo campus to encourage co-workers to support United Way funded agencies.
“Last year, VIU students, staff and faculty raised $14,000for the United Way,” said Heise. "Our goal this year is to raise even more by reaching as many people as we can and teaching them about the United Way. VIU has the potential to make a huge contribution, and I encourage everybody to consider giving even a little bit.”
Heise will be organizing presentations at staff meetings and union meetings, as well as setting up information tables at the Nanaimo campus. On Oct. 18 and 19 she will be in the Welcome Centre; October 20 in the upper cafeteria; and October 27 and 28 in the lower cafeteria, each time from 10 am to 2 pm.
“We'll be collecting donations or employees can sign up for a payroll deduction program,” she said. Everyone is invited to drop by to hear more about the United Way, and win prizes donated by campus, employees and local businesses.
“Every dollar raised stays right in the community, enabling local non-profit organizations to help citizens in need through a variety of programs and services."
VIU’s workplace fundraising campaign will include other fun activities such as a by-donation yoga class (Nov. 2 from 12:00 to 12:50 in Building 355, Room 211), bake sales, a costume contest, and 50/50 draw at the Trades and Applied Faculty Social on October 26.
While Heise's main role is to support workplace fundraising efforts at VIU, she is also helping other local businesses conduct their United Way campaigns.
Funds raised this year will help children and their families, and be used for programs to engage youth and support seniors.
The campaign continues to Nov. 5.
