If you love jazz, mark your calendar.
A free public jazz concert takes place on Monday, July 12 at 7 p.m. in the Malaspina University-College Theatre.
The concert features performances by students ranging in age from 12 to 70 from the 18th annual Summer Jazz Academy. The evening wrap-up concert also features a brief cameo appearance by the star-studded faculty.
The Summer Jazz Academy faculty includes trumpeter Arnie Chycoski, singer Joani Taylor, guitarist Pat Coleman, bassist Kenny Lister, pianist and saxophonist Ross Taggart, master percussionist Buff Allen,
saxophonist Steve Jones, bass trombonist John Capon and bassist Brian Stovel.
The intensive seven-day jazz academy, which began July 6 at Malaspina, allows students to "develop their skills in jazz music, including instrumental and vocal clinics, jazz workshops, song writing and recording," said Artistic Director John Capon.
As part of the academy, the faculty performs free daily concerts from 1 to 2 p.m. in Building 320, room 105. The afternoon concerts (Friday through Monday) are open to the public.
"Anybody who loves jazz is welcome to attend," said Capon.
The Summer Jazz Academy was formed in 1987 through Malaspina's Centre for Continuing Studies in cooperation with Nanaimo-Ladysmith School District. The event is sponsored by 97.3 The Eagle and 106.9 The Wolf.
Capon said similar jazz camps are held on Saltspring Island in the fall each year and in Smithers in the winter. For more information about these events, contact Capon at (250) 247 8531 or email: jcapon@shaw.ca
