The Summer Jazz Academy, held from July 5 to 11 at Malaspina University-College in Nanaimo, will be a lot of fun for all ages and levels of experience. This seven day workshop is now in its 21st year and shows no signs of slowing down.
Artistic director John Capon is excited about the star studded faculty at the Academy this year.
"We have always had great players teaching with us and this season is no exception," he said.
Returning for this year’s event are singer Joani Taylor, guitarist Pat Coleman, bassist Kenny Lister, pianist and saxophonist Ross Taggart, master percussionist Buff Allen, saxophonist Steve Jones, bass trombonist John Capon and bassist Bryan Stovell.
We are also proud to announce the addition of Trumpeter Derry Byrne, a much sought-after session and live performer who is comfortable in virtually all styles of music. He has played everything from principal with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra to Jazz chairs in bands lead by some of the great jazz artists of our time. He has also recorded with YES, Aerosmith, Barenaked Ladies, Colin James, Boz Scaggs and Diana Krall. Some of his Broadway credits include Miss Saigon, Kiss Of The Spider Woman, 42nd Street, The Full Monty and West Side Story.
The Summer Jazz Academy was formed in 1987. It is an intense seven day program of instrumental and vocal clinics and jazz workshops open to all levels from grade 8 band and up. It will be held at the Malaspina University-College music building, July 5 - 11, 2007.
As well as the clinics and workshops, the faculty will perform every day from 1:30 - 2:30 pm. There is also a wrap up concert Wednesday, July 11, 2007, at 3:00 p.m. in the Malaspina Theatre. Admission to these performances is free and everyone is welcome.
The Summer Jazz Academy is coordinated by the Malaspina University-College Centre for Continuing Studies. Interested musicians are encouraged to register as soon as possible to secure their spot.
