Students enrolled in Malaspina's chef training program at the Culinary Institute of Vancouver Island won the People's Choice Award for their chili at the 2008 Qualicum Fire and Ice Competition. The students and their mentor-instructor, Chef Michael Pelletier, headed from Malaspina's Nanaimo Campus to Qualicum Beach with 30 litres of chili, stoves, pots, pans, towels, tents, tables, sanitizers and condiments. The chili was heated, garnished and served up to the public as students handed out "explore-discover-excel" stickers to promote the new Vancouver Island University.
