Story-telling event at VIU Oct. 28

October 27, 2011 - 7:34am

Students, faculty and staff at Vancouver Island University are invited to a unique even called It’s a True Story SLAM this Friday night.

Sponsored by Creative Writing and Journalism class 202, round one of It's a True Story SLAM will be held in Building 355/Room 211 at 7 pm, Oct. 28.

“We invite students, staff and faculty to pitch us your true story in under five minutes,” said instructor Susan Juby. The top ten stories will go on to round 2 which will be held December 6 at The Vault, where the storytellers will get ten minutes to tell their stories to a panel of judges and an enthusiastic crowd.

Cash and other prizes will be awarded to the top two stories. Glory and admiration will be awarded to everyone who participates.

Juby said there are a few ground rules to the competition. All stories must be true. “There can be no myths, fables, fairy tales, poems, fiction or telling other people's stories,” said Juby. “Basic principles of storytelling apply: good stories have beginnings, middles and endings.”

All stories must be told without notes, other memory aids, or props (including musical instruments).

The stories are performances intended for an audience: how you tell it matters. Time lines must be adhered to. Each competitor will get a one minute grace period. A full point will be deducted for every minute over time the performer goes after the initial minute.

The competition is open to the entire VIU community. Students, faculty and staff are all welcome to enter.
