Thinking about pursuing your education? Malaspina University-College is offering over 100 university credit courses in a wide range of subjects between May and August.
"We have something for everyone, whether you are getting a jump on your fall semester or you are interested in exploring an area for professional development, general interest and expertise," said Sheila Cooper, Program Coordinator for Malaspina's Centre for Continuing Studies.
Courses are offered in three timeframes: May 2 to June 17 (seven weeks), and June 20 to August 5 (seven weeks) and May 2 to August 5 (14 weeks), at Malaspina's Nanaimo campus.
Subjects include visual design, digital photography, languages (Spanish, Chinese, Japanese), philosophy and film, fundamentals of acting, film studies, law and politics in Canada, and anthropology.
Summer students have full access to many resources at Malaspina, including the library, gymnasium, cafeteria, art gallery and theatre.
"Most summer courses are accelerated, which means they are completed in seven instead of the usual 14 weeks," explained Cooper. "That's about half the time it takes to complete a normal three credit university course during a regular fall or spring semester."
Due to the intensive nature of the courses, students can take a maximum of three courses during each seven-week session.
Accelerated courses typically appeal to post-secondary students at Malaspina or from other institutions who want to earn additional university credits during the summer months, said Cooper.
Recent high school graduates, semi-retired individuals or people who work part-time may also be interested in summer classes.
"If you've been out of the post-secondary education system for a while and are thinking about returning to school in the fall, taking a summer session course is a good way to ease back into academic life," said Cooper. "For recent high school graduates, it's a great way to get a jump on your fall studies."
The summer session is the perfect time to enjoy a more relaxed atmosphere on campus and familiarize yourself with all the amenities Malaspina has to offer, Cooper added.
Summer session courses fill up quickly, so Cooper encourages students to register early to avoid disappointment.
