Progressions 2007 features Malaspina student artwork

April 10, 2007 - 5:00pm

The best paintings, photography, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking and other artwork by Malaspina University-College’s Visual and Applied Art students will be on display at Progressions 2007, an annual exhibition, April 20 to May 12.

Selected works will be unveiled at an opening reception April 20, 6:30 pm, at the Nanaimo Art Gallery, located at Malaspina’s main campus. (900 Fifth Street). An awards ceremony follows in the Malaspina Theatre (building 310) at 7:30 pm.

Award winning professional poster designs, advertisements, and book covers produced by Malaspina’s Graphic Arts students will be displayed in the theatre lobby. A showcase of elegant floor plans, business and room designs by Interior Design students will also be on display. The best works from emerging first-year students in all the programs will be displayed in the Visual and Applied Arts building.

Each year, Malaspina’s Visual and Applied Arts students submit up to three of their best works to a faculty jury. Student Kelly Baker hopes that her “still life painting of Barbie figurines” will be accepted for Progressions 2007. Ashlee Corpe, a fourth-year Visual Art student, is putting the finishing touches on an abstract painting she will submit to the jury. The textured piece is eight feet high by three and a half feet wide that uses impasto layers of paint and pure intense colours. It will be Corpe’s last painting before she graduates from Malaspina.

Student Lillian Lai notes that Progressions 2007 is “a chance to exhibit our works and show the world what we have been up to.” Everett Wong adds that Progressions is also an opportunity to “see the works of our talented peers.”
