Dear VIU community,
Happy New Year, and welcome to the start of the 2026 Spring Semester at Vancouver Island University. I hope everyone had a safe and restful holiday season. The beginning of a new semester is always an exciting time – one filled with fresh opportunities, new challenges and the anticipation of what we can accomplish together.
To our students: whether you’re returning or joining us for the first time, welcome. The study habits and routines you developed – or are just beginning to build – will serve you well in the months ahead. Embrace the opportunities this semester brings, stay true to your goals and reach out for help when you need it.
For the students taking part in RockVIU new student orientation activities, I hope you feel the strength and support of the VIU community from your very first day, and that you’re excited about the path ahead. I look forward to meeting many of you throughout the activities our RockVIU team has planned.
To our employees: thank you for the collaboration, creativity and dedication you bring to supporting our students. As we start this new term, your work continues to create an environment that supports meaningful learning experiences and ensures students achieve successful academic outcomes.
I wish everyone a productive and rewarding semester. If you see me around campus, feel free to say hello – I always appreciate hearing what brought you to VIU and what you’re working toward.
Warm regards,
Dennis Johnson, PhD
