PRESERVATION AND IMPORTANCE OF BC’S GARRY OAK ECOSYSTEM SUBJECT OF FREE LECTURE

March 11, 2014 - 9:40am

Gardens Aflame: Garry Oak Meadows of BC’s South Coast” is the topic for this week’s free Science and Technology Lecture Series at Vancouver Island University (VIU).

Lecturer Maleea Acker from the University of Victoria is a writer, poet and journalist with a special interest in the ethical and scientific issues and dilemmas associated with restoration projects of local Garry Oak ecosystems.

“Garry oak meadows are some of the most threatened ecosystems in BC, and also some of the most ecologically diverse,” says Acker. “The best part of writing about these meadows has been the commitment I’ve seen to restoration and species protection by so many volunteers and scientists. My talk will highlight a few of their stories and the ongoing efforts to protect remaining meadows, some of the most beautiful examples of which can be found in the Duncan area.”

Acker’s lecture takes place Wednesday, March 12 from 7 to 8 pm at VIU’s Nanaimo campus, Building 356, Room 109.

“We invite members of the public to join us,” says Wendy Simms, technician in VIU's Biology department.

“The series is aimed at both non-scientific and scientific audiences, so we encourage people with non-science backgrounds to attend.”

Each lecture is followed by a question and answer session.
