Portal magazine launches with a party April 5

March 28, 2012 - 1:59am

The class of Portal magazine will be celebrating the publication and launch of the magazine’s 2012 issue Thursday, April 5, 5:30 pm-8:30 pm.

The launch party will take place in the Royal Arbutus Room of Bldg. 300 at the Nanaimo VIU campus. Doors open at 5:30 and the festivities will commence at 6 sharp. This event is free to attend, and is open to both the VIU community and the public.

Alongside sales of Portal 2012 (hot off the press!), the launch will include appetizers, door prizes, contributor readings, entertainment, and a reading from special guest Alan Twigg — author, producer, musician and the publisher of BC Book World.

Additionally, the Creative Writing & Journalism department will present scholarships and awards to deserving students at the launch, as well as acknowledging and congratulating this year’s program graduates.

The class of Portal 2012 has worked extremely hard over the last two semesters to raise funds for the publication of the 2012 issue, and that hard work has paid off. For the first time in Portal’s history, the magazine will be published in full colour, showcasing the beautiful artwork and photography found throughout the magazine.

Graphic Design student Jordan Wende is this year’s cover designer. Wende’s stunning cover image reflects the idea, content, and mandate of Portal 2012 to a tee. As usual, the Portal class had its work cut out in choosing the winning cover design—so be sure to take a moment at the launch to take a peek inside Portal 2012’s cover selection process by browsing through all of the other amazing cover designs produced by Ellen McCluskey’s ARTG 344 class!

This year’s launch will also be celebrating the legacy of Rhonda Bailey, publishing professor and fearless leader of the Portal class for the last 17 years, who retired at the end of last semester. Bailey’s position as publisher of Portal magazine has been passed on to Creative Writing and Digital Media Studies instructor and long-time editor, Joy Gugeler. Gugeler has helped to bring about the second significant change; the listing of Portal on Magazines Canada, which will allow for the distribution of Portal 2012 all across Canada.

Portal magazine has been part of Nanaimo’s arts scene for more than 19 years and has allowed burgeoning VIU student writers, photographers, and artists a place in which to showcase their work. Portal has been, and still is, the only literary magazine published in the Nanaimo area.
