Parents and students invited to open forum at VIU Feb. 18

February 12, 2009 - 7:47am

Calling all parents.

Do you have a child considering post-secondary education? If so, you and your child are invited to an open forum at Vancouver Island University February 18.

Organized by the university’s Community and School Liaison Office, the forum will showcase VIU’s program options, admission process and more.

“The purpose of the evening is to inform students and parents about everything VIU has to offer,” explained Glynis Steen, coordinator of the Community and School Liaison Office. “This forum is for students who have already decided they are coming here to study next September, and for those who haven’t made a final decision.

“We’ll have representatives from financial aid, advising and recruitment available to answer questions. Students and parents will hear an overview of our programs, and a first-hand account from a current student about what it’s like to study at VIU.”

Steen encourages students and their parents to check out the university’s website (www.viu.ca) for information about specific programs, but points out that most programs will be accepting applications through to the start-up of classes in September.

VIU offers many attractive features for students, Steen said, including small class sizes and a friendly learning environment that allows students and faculty to get to know each other on a first-name basis. Students at VIU have opportunities for hands-on research experience, community outreach and global field studies through internships, exchanges and study abroad programs.

VIU has evolved from a small community college to a dynamic, internationally known university supporting a student population in excess of 18,000 full and part-time learners.

With a main campus in Nanaimo and regional campuses in Duncan, Parksville/Qualicum and Powell River, VIU provides a diverse range of training and education. Offering programs from basic literacy to vocational programs, trades, undergraduate and graduate degrees, VIU encourages all students to explore their potential, discover more about their world and excel in life and learning.

Parents’ Night will be held at VIU’s Nanaimo campus in the Royal Arbutus Room (above the main cafeteria) in Building 300, Feb. 18 from 7:30 to 9 pm. Refreshments will follow. Please register in advance by calling Lori Wilkie at 250-740-6566.
