Pacific Rim Academy of Chefs de Cuisine leaves parting gift

May 5, 2004 - 5:00pm

What a great day for Culinary Artists at Malaspina UC. We have a new awards endowment from the former Pacific Rim Academy of Chefs. Once upon a time there was a group of local chefs who decided to create a local association of the Canadian Federation of Chefs de Cuisine. This association was founded in the 1960’s and over time evolved into what eventually became known as the Pacific Rim Academy of Chefs de Cuisine. Many events were executed, the profession was established and some great restaurants came and went. Culinary competitions, golf tournaments, fund raisers and day to day running of food service operations and restaurants were promoted and supported by this local group. Names such as Gerd Voigt, Brenda English, Gunner Wong, Chris Rempel, and Gordon McCaan who were local food heroes kept this club going until 1998. Eventually this membership declined and the chapter closed. On Thursday, May 6, 2004 local chef Gerd Voigt presented Malaspina’s Culinary Arts program with a cheque for $5563 to create a student achievement award. The exciting part of this is that the MUC foundation will match this donation as an endowment and as it collects interest it will pay out in perpetuity to good serious cook students who need it. Students and their instructors gathered in the food lab pictured behind to give a heartfelt round of appreciative applause for future student awards.
