If you’re thinking about returning to school, there are lots of exciting courses available in the online world at Vancouver Island University.
“Students can learn online anytime they want”, said Sheila Cooper, head of VIU’s online development team. “It’s an excellent option for students.”
Starting in September, several dozen online courses will be offered for full university credit, including twelve courses offered in Creative Writing and Journalism during the fall and spring semesters.
CREW 440, a fourth year Writing for Television Workshop, will be taught by Nancy Jack, a screenwriter from Los Angeles. Jack has written for shows developed by both Warner Brothers and Touchstone, the two largest television producers in the world. She has also written scripts for two of television’s most popular producers, including Jerry Bruckheimer (“Just Legal” and “Without a Trace”) and J.J. Abrams (“What about Brian?”) In 2005, she participated in the prestigious Warner Brothers TV Drama Writing Workshop and earned a M.F.A. in Screenwriting from Loyola Marymount University.
"We’re really excited to have Nancy Jack participate in teaching online Creative Writing and Journalism courses at VIU,” said Frank Moher, Chair of VIU’s Creative Writing and Journalism department.
“I personally believe online courses can offer a better educational experience than traditional, face-to-face classes,” he said. “Besides the convenience of working in your pajamas if you want, the online environment allows for the sort of direct, one-on-one relationship with the instructor and other students that isn't always possible in a real life classroom setting. Online courses aren't right for everyone, but they are great option for a lot of people.”
While Moher is excited about the wide range of creative writing classes available online for students, he also points out that quality of instruction at VIU is excellent.
“VIU has one of the most extraordinary Creative Writing faculties in the country,” said Moher. “Our instructors are widely published, produced, and have many awards to their credit. And now, thanks to online learning, anyone, anywhere has access to them."
Cooper said there are several reasons why online courses are gaining in popularity.
“Transportation costs are a big factor and people generally want more flexibility,” she said. “Online courses make it easier for working professionals to work and take courses, as well as parents of young children who want to return to school but can’t necessarily leave the comfort and responsibilities of home. Online courses allow them to pursue their education and learn something new. It definitely makes life easier when you can save commuting time.”
Online certificate programs are also available in the following programs: Advanced Diploma in GIS Applications, Event Management and Health Services Administration.
