New President’s Scholarships at VIU offer first full-ride

Vancouver Island University (VIU) has developed an exciting new scholarship initiative called the 'VIU President’s Scholarship Programs ’ which will provide the first full-ride, ongoing scholarships the institution has ever offered.

“I am proud to announce these scholarships, as they represent VIU’s first ever effort to create tuition support that is potentially renewable every year of the successful candidates ' undergraduate experience,” said VIU President Dr. Ralph Nilson.

There are four new scholarship programs included among the President’s Scholarships. These will include the President’s Entrance Scholarships for Vancouver Island high school students, the President’s Entrance Awards for Scholar Athletes, the Chancellor’s Award Scholarships for Aboriginal Students and the President’s Scholarships for continuing students. All will provide full tuition to students and will be renewable for up to a maximum of five years for the successful duration of their undergraduate studies.

“I believe these scholarships will benefit both students and the institution,” said Nilson. “As Vancouver Island University continues to grow and evolve, our priority remains directed toward the needs of our students. We anticipate many ‘Presidential Scholars’ in the years to come.”

The development of these prestigious awards represents a significant enhancement to VIU’s current scholarship offerings.

“As the institution evolves and grows as a new university, it is critically important that we create initiatives that foster that growth and reward the students in our community,” Nilson added.

The President’s Entrance Scholarship for Vancouver Island public high school students is available to the top academic student from each Vancouver Island and Powell River public high school. If their top student chooses VIU, they will receive full tuition for up to a maximum of five years.

The President’s Entrance Awards for Scholar Athletes is available to the top academic varsity athlete as selected and recruited by the coaching staff in the men’s and women’s volleyball, basketball, soccer, badminton and golf programs.

The third new scholarship is the Chancellor’s Award Scholarship for Aboriginal Students, which is available to the six top academic students from First Nations Communities, Friendship Centres, or Metis organizations on Vancouver Island and in Powell River.

The final award is the President’s Continuing Studies Scholarship. This award is available to the top academic student in each academic faculty who will be continuing their studies at VIU.

All scholarships will provide full tuition up to a maximum of five years for the successful duration of undergraduate studies.
