Nanaimo and Cowichan campuses and Parksville centre closed for the morning (February 28) due to severe weather

Tuesday, February 28, 2023: Vancouver Island University’s Nanaimo and Cowichan campuses and the Parksville centre areclosedthis morning, Tuesday, February 28 due to severe weather. The tiwšɛmawtxw(PowellRiver) campus will remain open. Milner Gardens and Woodland is open for employees and closed to the public as regularly scheduled. 

Campus closure days are regular workday/learning days unless the work/learning performed is on campus and cannot be performed remotely. 

If you are unable to continue to work or study remotely on a snow closure day due to other obligations, please contact your supervisor or your instructor to discuss options.  

Facilities that will remain open on the Nanaimo campus during the closure include:  

  • The Library Commons (card ID access only)  

  • Upper cafeteria seating area (including microwaves) 

  • VIU Residences   

The VIU Gym is closed.  

Updates 

The next update will beby 10:30 am today (February 28) for the status of afternoon classes. 

TheVIU Safety Appprovides the latest updates and information. To receive push/screen notifications from the VIU Safety App, go to your phone’s settings, scroll down, click on “VIU Safety,” and then enable “Allow Notifications.” 

After the VIU Safety App is updated, information is shared via:   

  • the main VIU website (www.viu.ca)  

  • email (employees and students) 

Re-opening information 

Employees: 

If your campus re-opens and you are unable to report to work or will be late to work because of ongoing inclement weather conditions and/or you have dependents affected by lack of childcare and alternative arrangements cannot be made, please contact your manager/department lead. We encourage you to use your discretion and work with your manager to make alternate work arrangements. People with mobility challenges or known medical conditions that may be exacerbated by a fall due to slippery conditions/weather conditions on campus may wish to evaluate their individual circumstance with their manager prior to coming to campus.  

Students: 

Weknow our region has many micro-climates and snow accumulation can vary dramatically. Students are asked to use their best judgment when deciding if they are able to travel if your campus is open. If you are not able to safely travel to campus, students are asked to let their instructors know and work with your instructor for accommodations for missed work and exams due to severe weather.
