Political Studies prof keeping an eye on federal by-elections
Three by-elections are set for Monday. These are exciting by-elections because they will determine whether Carney gets a majority, especially since Marilyn Gladu, a Conservative Ontario MP, crossed the floor this week. Regardless of the outcome, there is a lot to discuss, says Dr. Michael MacKenzie, VIU’s Jarislowsky Chair in Trust and Political Leadership:
If he falls short of a majority (which is looking less likely now, as he only needs one to reach a slim majority, two for an easier time controlling the House), he will have to continue governing with the support of other parties, and he will likely continue to try to recruit people from other parties. Is floor crossing democratically legitimate? It depends on how you look at it.
If he gets his majority, will this be good for the governance of the country? Will it be good for democracy? It may make it easier for Carney to quickly negotiate a new free trade deal with the United States. But it will also give parliament (and thus Canadians) less influence over the direction of Carney's government. Many people intuitively think that a majority government is better, but our minority governments have historically been very productive.

VIU sets course for strong financial future
VIU has addressed its deficit, finishing the 2025-26 fiscal year with a small surplus, and expects balanced budgets going forward. The university is now entering a strengthening phase where the institution will focus on long-term sustainability and student success.
“This is an important turning point for VIU,” said Dr. Dennis Johnson, Interim President and Vice-Chancellor. “Thanks to the hard work of the VIU community, the immediate financial crisis is behind us, allowing the university to strengthen the student experience and make the changes needed to serve our communities well into the future.”

Guests can explore interactive student stations, view portfolios and connect with emerging creators working across digital storytelling, including text, audio and video.
“One of the thrills of being a professor is seeing the pride students take in their unique work as creative media makers and knowing they’re starting a conversation with the public that continues a dialogue about the role media could, and should, play – present and future,” says Joy Gugeler, Chair of the Media Studies program.
At 6:30 pm, graduates will be recognized with short video interviews produced by faculty member Debra Pentecost. Refreshments will be served and nearby parking is available, including at Port Place. For more information, contact Joy.Gugeler@viu.ca.
