Math students put to the test at Malaspina

On May 2, math students from local high schools competed in Malaspina University College’s annual British Columbia Secondary School Mathematics Contest.


43 juniors (grades 8-10) and 36 seniors (grades 11-12) from ten different high schools attended (Aspengrove, Dover Bay, John Barsby, Kwalikum, Ladysmith, Malaspina International, Nanaimo Christian School, NDSS, Wellington and Woodlands).


Competing students completed a comprehensive math test in the morning before playing a game of Mathematics Jeopardy in the afternoon. Malaspina mathematics professors tallied the results from the morning’s tests and gave out awards at the end of the day.


Individual winners in the senior division included (left to right) Sheng Wei (2nd) from John Barsby Secondary, Jane Wang (1st) from Dover Bay Secondary and Celeste Fang (3rd) also from Dover.


Individual winners in the junior division included Jason Wang (1st), Eva Chung (2nd), and Alice Hsueh (3rd), all from Dover Bay Secondary.


First place in the senior team division went to Dover Bay (members Celeste Fang, Matt Hird, Jane Wang and Dustin Trudeau) while first place in the junior team division also went to Dover Bay (members Emma Hsueh, Jason Wang, Eva Chung, Alice Hsueh and Michael Meanwell). Malaspina International High School won second place in the senior team division, while Aspengrove School won second place in the junior team competition.
