Malaspina’s athletics department is the top program in BC for 1998-99 after its Mariners teams collected the most points to win the British Columbia Colleges’ Athletic Association (BCCAA) Aggregate Trophy.
Having won the trophy three times from 1993 to 1997, this is the fourth time Mariner Athletics has taken the top honour. As a result Malaspina has gained a reputation for excellence and a high standard of athletic competition throughout the country.
Every year Men’s and Women’s Soccer, Basketball, Volleyball, and Badminton compete throughout the province as members of the BCCAA. Mariners competition results for the 1998-99 season include: Women’s Soccer - Bronze; Men’s Soccer - Gold; Women’s Volleyball - Gold (regular season league champions); Men’s Volleyball - seventh; Women’s Basketball - Silver (regular season league champions); and Badminton - Bronze.
In addition, the Canadian Colleges’ Athletics Association and the BCCAA have named Rick Bevis national and provincial Coach of the Year. This is the second time Bevis has been recognized by his national peers; he received the first award in 1993.
