Dr. Ralph Nilson, President and CEO for Malaspina University-College announced today that Dr. Leslie King has accepted the position of Vice-President Academic with Malaspina.

"Dr. King’s energy and enthusiasm for post-secondary education will be a good match with Malaspina," said Nilson. "Dr. King has an impressive background of education and experience in post-secondary education. She comes to us from the University of Manitoba where she was founding Dean of the Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth and Resources."

When asked about her appointment, Dr. King replied "I’m thrilled and honoured to have been provided with this opportunity. This is an exciting time in Malaspina’s evolution and I look forward to working with the Malaspina team to achieve full university designation."

King says she was attracted to Malaspina because of its reputation for having high calibre staff, faculty and students. She also stated that Malaspina’s success in the areas of Aboriginal and International Education and Malaspina’s ability to respond to global issues were positive reasons to accept the position.

"I’m inspired by the leadership at Malaspina and the work that is being done to create a vision for Malaspina’s future as a regional University," she said. "I look forward to engaging with the institution and the community in a process that explores the opportunities to be had as a result of university designation."

In addition to her role at University of Manitoba, King has held academic positions with Yale University, University of Pennsylvania, University of Vermont and the University of Northern British Columbia. King, who is originally from BC and who has family ties on Vancouver Island, stated, "It feels fantastic to be coming home and I can hardly wait to get started."

King will assume her duties in early August 2007. She will replace Dr. David Thomas who retires later this summer after eight years serving as Malaspina Vice-President Academic.
