Why not expand your mind and learn something new? Summer session classes begin at Malaspina University-College May 5.
“We’re offering over 60 academic session courses in a broad range of subjects between May and August,” said Sheila Cooper, program coordinator for Malaspina’s Centre for Continuing Studies. Summer session courses can be completed in seven weeks, about half the time it normally takes to complete a three credit university course during a regular semester.
Summer session courses will be offered in two time frames: May 5 to June 20 and from June 23 to August 8 at the Nanaimo campus.
Course offerings include art, Japanese, creative writing, English, history, media studies, theatre, accounting, economics, business management, physical education, biology, math, anthropology, philosophy, psychology, sociology and more.
Accelerated summer courses typically appeal to current students who want to complete their degrees faster, or to recent high school graduates, semi-retired individuals or people who work part-time.
“Taking summer courses is a good way to ease back into the post-secondary system, especially if you’ve been out of school for a while,” added Cooper. “For recent high school graduates, it’s a great way to get a jump on your post-secondary studies and to get comfortable with all that Malaspina has to offer. These courses also appeal to students who are attending other post-secondary institutions but are home in Nanaimo for the summer. We see some of these students signing up for electives or course prerequisites to transfer to their university or college."
Summer session students have full access to many on-campus resources, including the library, gymnasium, cafeteria, art gallery and theatre.
Courses typically fill up quickly so students are encouraged to register early to avoid disappointment.
