Malaspina launches new pulp and paper program

November 2, 2004 - 4:00pm

Job opportunities are expected to open up in the pulp and paper industry as a result of impending retirements. The industry is planning for the coming changes by working with Malaspina University-College to ensure that new employees are prepared for entry-level positions.

A nine-month pulp and paper operations certificate program starts on January 10, 2005 at Malaspina’s Nanaimo campus. The program will cover all aspects of the industry, including environmental awareness; pulp, paper, and utilities processes; safe work practices; and computer skills. Students will also have an opportunity to spend time in local pulp and paper mills to gain on-site experience.

Instructor John Marshall, who has taught similar programs in other parts of Canada and the U.S., says that by the end of the program students will have a solid understanding of how the industry works.

"It’s very important for pulp and paper mills to have a pool of potential employees who understand the industry and the issues and challenges it currently faces," said Marshall. "This program will provide students with a strong theoretical understanding of the processes to produce pulp and paper, and knowledge of the skills required to operate the various equipment, and the quality control systems used to meet product and environmental standards," he said.

Marshall added that graduates of the program would be suited for entry-level positions at pulp and paper mills where they can expect a secure working environment, shift-work, and starting salaries in the range of $23 an hour.

Fred MacDonald, Malaspina’s new Dean of Trades & Applied Technology, said that Malaspina is working closely with industry to design programs that are relevant and timely.

"Our new pulp and paper operations program is just one example of how Malaspina is helping industry deal with the looming shortage of skilled operators by training prospective employees," said MacDonald.
