Malaspina launches new business program in Cowichan

April 22, 2008 - 8:45am

A new eight-month pilot program offering students a Certificate in Business Management will be launched exclusively at Malaspina University-College’s Cowichan campus in September 2008.

“Malaspina's Faculty of Management has designed this dynamic, full-time program because of the high demand for business related programming in the Cowichan area,” said Maria Lauridsen, campus principal.

“The new Certificate in Business Management (CBM) program is an exciting opportunity for students who are entrepreneurial in nature or curious about a career in business. By the end of the eight-month program students will have a sound introduction to the key areas of business practices and be well equipped to enter the work force immediately.”

Courses include an introduction to economics, financial accounting, marketing, E-management, and business and technical writing.

Lauridsen said the new CBM program is designed to provide students with many unique options. Students who complete the eight month program can transfer their course credits straight into the second year of Malaspina’s Bachelor of Business Administration undergraduate degree program, or the second year of the diploma program in Business Management. Both programs are currently offered at the Nanaimo campus.

Mike Mann, dean of management programs, said Malaspina is pleased to offer this kind of flexibility to prospective students.

“We’re seeing growing demand in the Cowichan Valley,” he said, “and it's our goal to make post-secondary training as convenient as possible for student learners. The new CBM program offered exclusively at the Cowichan campus allows students to begin their business studies right in their home community. They have the option of finding immediate employment or using their course credit to pursue further training. It’s a win-win.”

Enrolment in the new eight month CBM program is limited to 18 students. Applications are being accepted now. To apply, call (250)746-3509 or refer to the website at viu.ca/management.
