February 7 Malaspina’s Japanese international students organized a Japanese Festival to introduce Japanese art and culture to the Nanaimo community. The Festival was so successful it showed a profit of $1,120.29.

Japanese Festival organizer and Malaspina international student Daisuke Sugiwaki said, “From the beginning we wanted to help local charity if our Festival made a profit but we had no idea how successful it would be. Thanks to all the Nanaimo people who came to our Festival we’re happy to assist two community groups.”

Accepting the cheques were Kim-Cowley Adam for Nanaimo Arts Alive and Yuko Tsuyuki of Malaspina’s Global Studies Club “Friends of Paraguay.”

Janet King, Malaspina’s International Student Activity Planner, said, “We’re very proud of our Japanese Festival organizers. What a great example they’re setting for all students.”

Because their first Festival was such a success, the Japanese project team has decided to host another one. “We hope to see you all again next year,” said Sugiwaki.
