Malaspina Foundation Chair Mike Brown handed over a symbolic cheque for $2.1-million to Malaspina President Ralph Nilson last night, in front of a crowd of 200 Malaspina donors at the Nanaimo campus.
The cheque represents the proceeds from all of the Foundation’s fundraising and investment efforts during 2006-2007.
“We are proud to have had such strong support from the community for our students and our regional university-college,” Brown said. “This was a banner year for the Foundation, and it just seems to keep getting better each year.”
The annual event is the Foundation’s way to recognize and thank donors, sponsors, volunteers and supporters. The event also marked the unveiling of the Foundation’s new Donor Wall of Honour in the campus’s main entrance foyer.
Third year Music student, Dylan Sharpe of Courtenay, and Rachelle Jones of Duncan, who begins first-year Business studies in September, spoke on behalf of the more than 400 students who receive donated scholarships, awards and bursaries each year.
President Ralph Nilson paid tribute to all the donors who provide awards to students, and acknowledged that community and family support contribute significantly to the success of each of Malaspina’s 10,500 students.
He also presented Governor-General’s and Lieutenant-Governor’s Medals for high academic achievement to Jason Devlin, Bachelor of Science, for top degree program graduate, Lauren Hobson, Criminology, top diploma graduate, and Eric Minshall, Welding, for excellence in studies and positive contributions to Malaspina and the community.
