Malaspina CE announces new Athletic Therapy course

Malaspina University-College Community Education is offering a new course called Athletic Therapy: An Introduction, beginning March 7.


Athletic Therapy will be of interest to coaches, managers, parents and individuals involved with sports and teams.


Students will learn about the prevention and treatment of common athletic injuries. As a practical course, it will focus on various taping and wrapping techniques and hands-on emergency first aid application and protocol.


There will be discussion about common injuries specific to various sports and those of interest to participants, including the prevention and management of these injuries.


Course instructor and Mariner Men's Basketball coach, Sharon Hamilton, said, "This course will interest anyone thinking of a sports related career. Many sports teams like hockey, football, rugby and basketball are looking for tapers, equipment handlers and therapists. As well, the course will be a good introduction to those thinking of a career in athletic therapy and physiotherapy."


The course is co-sponsored by PacificSport, a network of regional and national centres supporting the development of sport from the grassroots to the elite. Drew Cooper, manager of the Vancouver Island Region of PacificSport said, "One of our main functions is to support high-quality sports education. This course will make playing conditions safer for athletes and we're behind it 100 percent."


Athletic Therapy includes eight sessions from 7 to 10 p.m.beginning Wednesday, March 7 and runs until April 25.
