Malaspina University-College and the Central Vancouver Island Multicultural Society raised $12,204 to aid Asian tsunami victims on Wednesday, January 19. With $7,500 in matching funds from the federal government the total is $19,704.

About 200 people paid a minimum donation of $25 each to attend the fundraising event held at the Nanaimo campus in the Centre for International Education and the Malaspina Theatre.

Appetisers with a distinct Asian flavour donated by many Nanaimo restaurants were served. Following the meal, the crowd took part in a candlelight parade to the Malaspina Theatre where they were entertained by talented international students and visiting and local musicians.

“Malaspina University-College and the Central Vancouver Island Multicultural Society thank those who volunteered their time and money to aid tsunami victims,” said Bronwyn Jenkins-Deas, dean of international education. “We’d particularly like to thank the local restaurants that donated food and the musicians who generously provided beautiful music for the evening.”

During the proceedings, Malaspina international students whose home countries were affected by the tsunami disaster held educational sessions describing their countries and the extent of the damage sustained.

All proceeds will be forwarded to the Canadian Red Cross to aid in the relief efforts in Southeast Asia.
