Life on Vancouver Island a dream come true for Malaspina professor

When Guy Le Masurier left Vancouver Island to earn his PhD in physical education, he knew he would miss the beautiful island scenery and lifestyle.

“I was away from the island for six years, but I wanted to come back and live in our dream home on the water,” said Le Masurier, who grew up in the Comox Valley. “I was thrilled to come to Malaspina because it allowed me to continue my love of teaching, while living in these beautiful surroundings.”

After receiving his bachelors and masters in physical education, Le Masurier received his PhD from Arizona State University and went on to work as an assistant professor of kinesiology at Penn State where he worked on various research projects while he taught. After a couple of years, he and his wife missed living on Vancouver Island, so they packed up and moved back, with Guy taking a job as a professor in the physical education department at Malaspina.

“I came back to the island in 2006 so I could settle down in an environment where I’m surrounded by the ocean and the mountains,” he said. “That’s a big part of our life.”

Le Masurier and his wife, who is a global studies student at Malaspina, are enjoying their active island lifestyle, with a home on Protection Island, where they act as volunteers for the local fire department. They love the feeling of community that surrounds them, but they also love the many challenges and rewards Malaspina offers.

“I was thrilled to come to Malaspina,” said Le Masurier. “This university prides itself on excellence in teaching. I knew it would be an exciting opportunity to hone my skills as a teacher in this great atmosphere.”

“Living and working here is great,” Le Masurier added. “Being so close to family, the outdoors, the ocean and the mountains is a dream come true.”

Guy Le Masurier recently published a middle school physical education textbook in the United States called ‘Fitness for Life: Middle School.’
