Have you ever wanted to make a movie?
Grab your director's cap because Malaspina University-College's Centre for Continuing Studies is offering a unique new course called Let's Make a Movie.
The six session course, which begins March 6 on the Nanaimo campus, provides "a good introduction to the many facets of filmmaking in the digital age," says Carol Salez, instructor and award-winning short filmmaker.
Budding filmmakers will work with other enthusiasts to make a short drama, documentary or experimental digital film.
"Experimental filmmaking is like being a rebel," explains Salez. "You think outside of the box and play against the rules in traditional filmmaking or story telling."
Students will learn that filmmaking is a collaborative, creative process by acting as crew members on other students' projects. "Students will learn how to write five to 12 minute scripts, how to act for the camera, and the basic functions of a video camera," explains Salez.
The course includes an overview of stages and positions in the production of short film, set etiquette, shoot scheduling as applicable to short film, and an overview of the iMovie software editing program. Filming and editing your movie will take place on the final two weekends.
"This course is a fun way of being introduced to short filmmaking," adds Salez. "With cheaper cameras and the iMovie editing program, almost anyone can become an independent filmmaker. You'll learn whether you have the time, energy and passion to seriously pursue independent filmmaking as a career."
Salez has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Multi-Media with a major in film and video from the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design. Last year, she won the Community Arts Council of Greater Vancouver Award for Best Video Short Film. Her work has appeared in the Independent Victoria Film Festival and in the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria.
