Job training available for pulp and paper industry

December 1, 2004 - 4:00pm

There are still seats available in a new nine-month pulp and paper operations certificate program being offered by Malaspina University-College, in partnership with the pulp and paper industry.

The new program, which starts January 10, 2005 at Malaspina’s Nanaimo campus, provides the theoretical and practical skills required to gain entry-level employment in pulp and paper mills. Entry level positions at pulp and paper mills offer a secure working environment, shift work and starting salaries in the range of $23 per hour.

"Job opportunities are expected to open up in this industry as a result of impending retirements," said instructor John Marshall. "The pulp and paper industry wants to ensure that new employees are prepared for entry-level positions. That’s why they are working with Malaspina to offer this new program."

The pulp and paper operations certificate program will cover all aspects of the industry, including environmental awareness; pulp, paper and utilities processes; safe work practices; and computer skills. Students will spend time in local pulp and paper mills to gain valuable on-site work experience. Program graduates will have a solid understanding of the how the pulp and paper industry works, and will be ready for immediate employment.

Prospective students must have completed grade 12, be in good health and physically fit to work in a demanding environment.
