Jazz buffs take note - Malaspina University-College is offering two unique courses for beginner or advanced musicians.

March 17, 2004 - 4:00pm

Instructor Pat Coleman will teach an Introduction to Jazz workshop and an Advanced Jazz Workshop from May 3 to June 18. It’s the first time Malaspina is offering these university credit courses during the summer session.

“The Introduction to Jazz workshop (MUSC 193) is a three credit course for people who have no or little prior experience playing jazz,” said Coleman, an accomplished musician and part-time instructor in Malaspina’s music department.

“We’ll cover basic rhythm, harmony, soloing and accompanying for all instruments. If you’re planning to enrol in a post-secondary jazz program, or just want to learn about jazz, this course offers an excellent introduction and chance to find out what the music is all about. We’ll play blues and simple standard jazz tunes in an organized band situation.”

Coleman is also teaching an Advanced Jazz Workshop (MUSC 293) for people with jazz experience. “It’s ideal for students who want to get a jump on their academic studies for the fall,” said Coleman. “Taking one or two credit courses during the summer session helps you earn your degree faster. This course will also be a fun place to play and hang out with other great players.”

Coleman is well known in the local music industry. He’s been involved in the recording industry since 1978, first as a session musician then as a writer and producer. He has played extensively on commercials for TV and radio, film scores, live TV shows and pop, country, folk, rhythm and blues, and jazz recordings. Coleman has played with numerous other artists and produced and written music for hundreds of commercials for clients such as Labatts, McDonalds, Inglis, Mattel and General Foods.

Partners in “Roadhouse Records,” Coleman has produced recordings for folk singer Bob Bossin, "Gabriola VORIXO" featuring John Reichman, Doug Cox and singers Ann Mortifee, Veda Hille, Roy Forbes, Valdy, Stephen Fearing, Raffi and Rick Scott, and "Eagle Rock Road" featuring Dave Gogo, Doug Cox and John Reichman.

The jazz workshops are among more than 85 university credit courses offered during Malaspina’s summer session, which runs from May 3 to June 18 (seven weeks), June 21 to August 6 (seven weeks) and May 3 to August 6 (14 weeks).

Summer courses are accelerated, which means they are completed in seven or 14 weeks, about half the time of normal three credit courses during the fall or spring semester.

Summer session courses fill up quickly, so students are encouraged to register early.  To register for the jazz workshops or find out more about other summer session courses, call 740-6160 or visit the website at: www.viu.ca/timetable/summersession.asp.
