From the President’s Desk: Welcome to the Fall 2025 Semester

As we begin a new academic year, I want to extend a warm welcome to all of you – whether you're returning or joining us for the first time. One of the things I’ve always loved about higher education is the energy that comes with a new term.

To our new students: welcome. I know our teams have been working hard to create a supportive and inclusive start for you. I hope you feel the strength of the VIU community around you and that you’re excited about the journey ahead.

To our returning students and employees: thank you for the care, dedication and creativity you bring to this university. It’s clear to me that VIU is not just a place of learning, but a place of connection and deep commitment – to one another, and to the communities we serve.

Over the past few months, I’ve had the privilege of meeting many of you and learning more about what makes this place special. Whether in the classroom, in support roles, on campus or in our communities, the impact of your work is far-reaching and deeply valued.

As we move forward, we know that post-secondary institutions are facing real challenges – enrolment shifts, rising costs, and evolving policy changes, to name a few. But I believe the strength of our community lies in its ability to meet these challenges with resilience and a shared commitment to student success.

This year, I’m looking forward to more conversations – through targeted discussions, informal meet-ups and campus events. I hope you’ll join me in these opportunities to connect and share your perspectives.

To our students: I wish you a year filled with curiosity, learning and meaningful experiences. I have enjoyed chatting with many of you at Rock VIU, VIU’s student orientation last week – the sense of possibility and potential was inspiring. And to our employees: thank you for all you do to create an environment where our students are set up for success. I hope to see many of you at the welcome back BBQ for employees from 12 to 1:30 pm on Wednesday, September 3.

If you see me around campus, please don’t hesitate to say hello – I’d love to hear your story and learn more about what brought you to VIU.

Here’s to a promising year ahead.

Warm regards,

Dennis Johnson, PhD
