Hairdressing students compete for top honours

April 11, 2007 - 5:00pm

Six Malaspina University-College hairdressing students recently competed in the 2007 Allied Beauty Association (ABA) hair and aesthetics exhibition in Vancouver on March 25 and 26.

“Our students did incredibly well,” said Sherry Leifer, an instructor in the hairdressing program at Malaspina. “We are very proud of them and excited to see such talent.”

The ABA hair show in Vancouver featured a number of competitions and displays, including various distributors showcasing their products, workshops, and separate hair and aesthetics competitions for professionals and students.

Meghan Ball, a student in Malaspina’s hairdressing program, won third prize in the New Talent Cut and Style competition. For that competition, entrants had to cut and colour their model’s hair, style their nails and dress them in appropriate clothing. Judges based their decisions on the complete package, but specifically looked for an adaptable, young cut and style with texture that complimented the model.

Leifer was particularly pleased with the performance of her students because the New Talent Competition includes hairdressers who have worked professionally in the industry for two years. Along with Ball, Malaspina students Melissa Keller, Quailla Riddy, Kim Sykes, Tracey McCaffery and Nicole Brien completed their cuts and impressed the ABA judges.

The Allied Beauty Association is a registered not-for-profit Canadian organization that represents more than 90% of the Canadian professional beauty supply industry.
