GrandKids University returns to VIU for third year

Grandparents and their grandchildren are discovering school spirit together once again at Vancouver Island University.

They’re packing their bags and coming to VIU for two days in July.

GrandKids University runs July 7 and 8 and features five Majors. Participants can get hands-on learning experiences with Field Biology, Anthropology, Fisheries & Aquaculture, Earth Sciences or University: Ready, Set, Go.

They also have the opportunity to stay overnight in residences at the Nanaimo campus.

The popular program, which doubled in size in its first two years, is now in its third year. Courses are taught by university professors and teachers.

“It’s wonderful to see multiple generations excited about learning. It’s a very special time for them without the parents in the middle” said program coordinator, Nahanni Ackroyd.

“Our hope is that one day these kids come back to VIU as university students. They’ll potentially recognize their professors and feel comfortable in the university environment. Already, some of the grandparents are taking other courses at the university.”

Many participants are returning from previous years, and they come from all over BC. The tuition fee is $99 per participant plus HST. Accommodation in residences is $28 per person per night plus HST. Activities are geared for children aged 7 to 12. A favourite adult can attend in place of a grandparent.

There are still a few spots left. Call 1-866-734-6252 for more information, or visit viu.ca/css.
