As part of the Dec. 1 grand opening at Brooks Landing in Nanaimo, Thrifty Foods unveiled a giant Nanaimo Bar measuring 8 feet x 3 feet as part of a fundraiser to build Shq'apthut: A Gathering Place at Vancouver Island University (VIU).
"Shq'apthut will provide Aboriginal students with culturally familiar surroundings and a welcoming atmosphere to help them fulfill their potential," says Susie Caswell, Development Manager, Vancouver Island University Development & Alumni. "Thrifty Foods is renowned for its commitment to supporting local and charitable causes and Nanaimo, as a whole, will benefit from a venue that respects, appreciates and shares the rich Aboriginal cultural heritage of our region."
The Nanaimo Bar Fundraiser runs from Wednesday, December 1 until Tuesday, December 14 and 100 per cent of Nanaimo Bar sales at all three Nanaimo locations will be donated to the construction of the Shq'apthut Gathering Place at Vancouver Island University.
"Brooks Landing is the perfect compliment to our other two Thrifty Foods Nanaimo area locations at Longwood Station and Port Place" says Milford Sorensen. "We have been proudly serving the region since 1987 and remain dedicated to being an active participant in the neighbourhoods and communities in which we work."
In honour of the opening all customers who swipe their Club Thrifty Foods card until December 31st will be entered into a draw to win Free Groceries for One Year. One prize of Free Groceries for One Year ($5,200 in Gift Cards) will be drawn at each Nanaimo store.
Thrifty Foods Fresh departments include full service meat, deli and seafood departments as well as a live seafood tank, hundreds of local and international cheeses and an in-store bakery. In addition, customers are also able to shop for their health and wellness needs at the Vitamins and More department.
