First Nation students win Canada Post Award

December 7, 2009 - 1:48am

Balancing school and

raising young children is never an easy task.

Nanaimo

students Wanda Good and Jennifer White made it happen with unwavering determination

and drive.  In spite of challenging life

circumstances, both women have distinguished themselves as strong role models

in their community.  Their ability to

persevere and their contribution to their family and community are being

recognized with the Canada Post Education Incentive Award.

Wanda

Good and Jennifer White are from the Snunyemuxw First Nation and are pursuing

careers in Child and Youth Care and Social Services at Vancouver Island University.  Both women each have their own unique story

but they share other similarities.  They have

overcome adversity in their lives to claim their right to a brighter future for

themselves and for their families.

Wanda

Good and Jennifer White will be presented with their award on:

Monday, December

7, 2009

1:00 – 1:30

p.m.

Snunyemuxw

First Nation Band Office

668 Centre

Street, Nanaimo, B.C.

Making the presentation of a $1,000

cheque will be Mark Pawlyshyn, Canada Post’s Local Superintendent.

“Wanda Good and Jennifer White are shining

examples of how far passion, inner strength, and hard work can take you in

life. They are well deserving of the Canada Post Education Incentive Award," said Pawlyshyn.

Good

and White are two of 20 recipients of the award from across Canada.  Another Nanaimo

student, Douglas Blanchard, received his award earlier this week.  Other recipients from

the Pacific Region are from Agassiz, Chilliwack, Nanaimo, and Victoria.  The awards celebrate the motivation and

determination of those who have conquered personal, economic or social

adversity in the pursuit of learning.

$1,000

awards are given to individuals who have returned to and successfully completed

one full year of high school and to individuals who have successfully completed

one full-year of post-secondary education, including vocational or skills training.  Canada Post would like

to congratulate Wanda Good and Jennifer White for all that they have achieved!
