A $70,000 belated Christmas gift will be coming to Malaspina University-College’s library campaign from the Festival of Trees event at Beban Park community centre last November. It is the biggest financial success in the Festival’s nine year history.

The proceeds will boost the Library campaign total to just over $1.3 million.

“This is a tribute to all the volunteers who worked so hard, and to the honour roll of sponsors who support Malaspina University-College,” said Leslie John, Chair of the Festival. “We can all be proud that we were able to put on an event that contributed to the seasonal spirit in the community, and that we were also able to increase the benefit to our university-college and to our students.”

The four-day Festival was organized  by volunteers of the Malaspina University-College Foundation, and featured Christmas trees and decorations, boutiques, children’s activities and special events.

“Malaspina University-College is indebted to all these wonderful volunteers, and to the community,” said Malaspina’s president Rich Johnston. “This is an exceptional Christmas gift and a real demonstration of support for all we are trying to do.”

The Library campaign aims to raise $1.75 million towards the $10 million cost of doubling the current Library at the Nanaimo campus. The Province is contributing $3 million and the balance will be raised through a loan and Malaspina’s entrepreneurial activities. Construction is already well underway, and with expected completion in September.
