COP 29 is the United Nations Climate Change Conference taking place in Baku, Azerbaijan until November 22, 2024. UN Climate Change Conferences take place every year and are the world’s only multilateral decision-making forum on climate change that brings together almost every country on Earth.
Looking for experts on climate change to add to your stories this week?
Dr. Lauren Touchant, a VIU Political Studies Professor, is a frequent attendee of these conferences. While she isn’t attending this year, she is following the developments closely and is planning to release a book for COP 30.
Dr. Erik Krogh, Co-Director of the Applied Environmental Research Lab, can speak on:
- The multiple benefits of transitioning to sustainable energy
- The connections between climate change and air quality
- The role of chemistry in getting to net zero
- Why dealing with methane matters
Geography Professor Dr. Jeff Lewis, a member of the Awareness of Climate change through Education and Research (ACER) project, can outline things we can do about climate change, individually and as active citizens electing and supporting strong leaders.
Graham Sakaki, Manager of the Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Region Research Institute, can share details about some of the climate action projects the research centre is working on, such as fish habitat monitoring, wetland mapping and marine debris surveys.
Dr. Aggie Weighill, Director of VIU’s World Leisure Centre of Excellence, can speak about the effects of climate change on the tourism industry (available starting Friday – she is currently running the Rural Recreation Summit).
