Exciting multimedia artist comes to Malaspina

March 5, 2008 - 6:30am

Multimedia visual artist Graeme Patterson will be giving a lecture at Malaspina University-College on March 11, as part of the 2008 Visiting Artist Series.

Patterson, who was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 1980, works in sculpture, installation, robotics, video and stop-motion animation.

“This is an invaluable opportunity to view the work of an exciting, young, contemporary artist from Saskatchewan and to hear a discussion of the ideas that influence his art-making process,” said Ellen McCluskey, a professor in the Art program at Malaspina.

Woodrow, which isPatterson’s upcoming exhibition at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, March 14-May 11, 2008, comprises some of the iconic sites and structures that define any respectable, but fading Canadian prairie farm community. Patterson has recreated large sculptural replicas of grain silos, a barn, the church, farm houses, the workshop, potholes so huge they might swallow whole farm trucks, large animals and a road heading out of town.

“Graeme Patterson’s work is fascinating,” said McCluskey. “Especially in the sense that it is a multi-faceted assortment of sculptural, architectural and multimedia forms that incorporate quirky robotics, stop animation, video and sound.”

Graeme Patterson’s short animated films, Don’t Ride Shopping Carts and Monkey and Deer have been screened at various film festivals – and have won first place awards at both the Atlantic and Garden State Film Festivals. Another large-scale multimedia installation piece, The Hockey Organ, will be exhibited in a group exhibition titled “Arena:  The Art of Hockey” at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia in April 2008.

“We are delighted to have Graeme Patterson visit Malaspina University College,” said McCluskey. “His work will be of particular interest to students in a wide range of arts-related disciplines – including visual and applied arts, media studies, digital media, and music -- as well as individuals in the community.”

Patterson will speak at Malaspina on Tuesday, March 11 from 4:30 – 6:00pm in building 200, room 203. For more information about his reading or about the Visiting Artist Series, please contact Ellen McCluskey at 753-3245, local: 2397
