Another unique season of Vancouver Island University’s (VIU) popular ElderCollege Saturday Speaker Series is underway.
About 50 people attended a recent presentation by VIU Biology professor Rob Wager who explored the question Can Genetically Modified Crops be Used Safely?
The series, which runs one Saturday per month, is the brainchild of the VIU ElderCollege Board.
“We’ve had great response to our ElderCollege classes and to our series of informative and educational talks,” says Regan McKeever, program coordinator for ElderCollege. “Many seniors living in the Nanaimo and Oceanside communities have active minds and still enjoy learning new things. Our participants are lifelong learners.”
The series continues October 26 with Gail Anderson’s Murders and Maggots presentation covering Forensic Entomology, the study of insects associated with a dead body in order to estimate the elapsed time since death.
This talk will explain how insects can be used to estimate time of death, as well as other factors such as position and presence of wounds, and analysis of poaching cases. True case histories will be used to illustrate the science.
On November 16, Vanessa Oltmann covers a very important topic: how to protect yourself from fraud. In a talk called Fraud Prevention For Seniors, Oltman will discuss how fraud can happen to anyone, anywhere, and often when we least expect it. She will teach participants how to develop a fraud protection strategy. Topics include a discussion of recent frauds affecting seniors, understanding the process by which ordinary people sometimes rationalize defrauding those who trust them and recognizing fraud’s red flags.
The Saturday Speakers Series takes place from 10 am to 12 noon in The Forum (main floor) of the Parksville Civic & Technology Centre, 100 Jensen Avenue, Parksville.
The cost is $5 for members of VIU’s ElderCollege; $10 for non-members. Tickets are available at the door or in advance by calling toll free 1-866-734-6252 or by email pqcampus@viu.ca. Space is limited so please purchase your tickets early.
