Early childhood education students get financial boost

March 6, 2008 - 7:30am

To help with the shortage of early childhood educators in British Columbia, the government has introduced a new bursary program that will help students in financial need and encourage growth in the industry.

This bursary program is a partnership between Early Childhood Educators of BC (ECEBC) and the Vancity Community Foundation with funds from the Ministry of Children and Family Development. The goal of the program is to assist Early Childhood Education (ECE) students with the cost of basic or post basic ECE programs at approved institutions like Malaspina University-College.

“Students can receive up to $500 per semester,” said Nancy McInnes, Chair of the ECE program at Malaspina. “You can apply for each course you are enrolled in and receive $100 per course up to the $500 maximum. This can make the training much more reasonably priced. Affordability is a real barrier for students, so we are happy this bursary is being offered to full time and part time students.”

Eligible students must be enrolled in an approved educational institution and program of study, provide proof of Canadian Citizenship or Landed Immigration status and proof of BC residency or proof that they are residing in BC while attending school. Students must also demonstrate financial need and have achieved a satisfactory course standing of ‘C’ or better.

Students in Malaspina’s ECE program are eligible for this bursary program if they meet the list of requirements. Future students will also have the opportunity to apply for these bursaries when they enrol in the program.

The ECE program at Malaspina is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to work with young children and their families in licensed child care settings. Students progress through an interrelated series of courses and practica designed to integrate theoretical learning, awareness of self in relationships, and practical experience in becoming an early childhood educator. This program may be completed on a part-time or full-time basis.

“We have an excellent program at Malaspina,” said McInnes. “Our graduates are in high demand and our students tell us they feel well prepared for their work in the field. This bursary opportunity will help them reach their goals.”

Application forms must be submitted by March 14, 2008. They are available for download at www.ecebc.ca. For more information about the Early Childhood Education program at Malaspina or about the bursary program, please contact Nancy McInnes at 740-6598.
