Dental Assistant Students in Nanaimo Schools

May 24, 2007 - 3:27am

The month of April provided a great opportunity for the Dental Assistant students from Malaspina University-College to be involved in community service. We visited classrooms at 3 elementary schools and 1 Day care in Nanaimo. Students spent time in each kindergarten to grade 7 class teaching oral hygiene along with various other topics such as cavity formation, nutrition, gingivitis, oral piercing and modifications and dangers of tobacco use.

Puppets with teeth were loaned to us by local Orthodontist Dr. Bill Finnegan for the students to teach toothbrushing to younger children. More than 700 toothbrushes were donated by the BC Dental Association, Sunstar Butler, and the Dental Assistant program, so that each child was able to take one home.

CDA students planned their lessons and researched supporting information as well as making teaching props such as a puppet stage, teeth, a larger than life tongue piercing, songs, stories and pictures to use in the classroom
