Culinary prof rides to beat cancer

Culinary Arts instructor Debbie Shore is stepping out of the kitchen for the ride of her life.

She started training for a 260-kilometre Ride to Conquer Cancer. The two-day trip, through Canada’s Pacific Northwest in June, is a fundraiser for cancer research.

“I’m not an athlete,” said Shore, who teaches in the Culinary Arts program at Vancouver Island University. “I’m a chef who likes to eat. I simply want to do something special for people affected by cancer.”

Shore’s crusade for cancer is personal.

“My first childhood friend passed away with leukemia after two tries with chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant,” she said. “She was a vibrant positive person who taught elementary school. While in hospital, her students made her 1000 paper cranes that decorated her hospital room.”

Shore’s mother-in-law lost her battle with colon cancer. Her mother survived colon cancer, while her grandmother – who lived to age 96 - survived two radical masectomies.

“We all have known or know someone who has been touched or taken by cancer,” said Shore. “The Ride to Conquer Cancer is a great event to support finding cures.”

As part of her training program, Shore is cycling to work. “That’s 40 kilometres one way,” said Shore proudly. “The first time took two hours. The second time, it took one hour and 45 minutes. We’re just starting to get into shape. I’m just waiting for longer days in April to really get going.”

Funds raised in The Ride to Conquer Cancer will support breakthrough research, exemplary teaching, and compassionate care made possible through BC Cancer Foundation.

“The beauty is that 87 percent of all funds raised go straight to research,” said Shore.

Each rider must raise $2,500. So far, Shore has collected $1,800. Her personal goal is to raise $3,200.

“It will be a challenge, but with my husband Albert Tomasson riding along with me, and the generosity of friends, family, VIU employees and students, I have no doubt a real impact will be made,” Shore said.
