Canadian Tire will be Santa again for 9th Annual Festival of Trees

June 25, 2003 - 5:00pm

Canadian Tire is going to be Santa Claus again for Nanaimo’s traditional welcome to the Christmas season.

Al Abbott, associate dealer of Canadian Tire in Nanaimo, today signed on again as presentation sponsor for the 9th annual Festival of Trees Christmas celebration at Beban Park at the end of November.

Canadian Tire has been presentation sponsor for the event every year since it began.

Canadian Tire’s $10,000 sponsorship will help underwrite the costs of staging the four-day event, and will boost the Festival’s goal of raising funds for Malaspina University-College to build a new library for students at the Nanaimo campus.

Over the last eight years the Festival and its many volunteers have raised almost $250,000 to support students at Malaspina University-College. The proceeds have bought computers, Library books and references, tools and technology, and bursary funds. Last year the Festival raised $50,000 to benefit the Dental Assisting program and the Fine Arts department.

The event features a multitude of Christmas trees and decorations, performances by school choirs and local entertainers, gift shops and children’s attractions, raffles and silent auctions, and a program of special events including a fashion show, seniors’ tea, and a gala auction and dance. More than 6,000 people attend annually, and the Festival is the largest community event in the Malaspina University-College Foundation’s annual program.
