What you need to know
Accidents and sudden illness can happen anytime, anywhere, including at VIU. And when such situations arise, it’s important to know about VIU First Aid Services and how to get the immediate care you or someone else in need requires.
Here’s what you need to know about VIU First Aid Services and what they offer.
What exactly is First Aid?
First Aid is the immediate care given to someone who’s hurt or feeling unwell. It helps prevent injuries from getting worse and in serious cases, it can even save a life.
At VIU’s Nanaimo and Cowichan campuses, Campus Security officers are trained in Intermediate First Aid, and there’s always someone on duty — 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They can respond to emergencies, provide first aid support and even guide fire, ambulance or police services to the right area on campus when needed.
Other VIU locations also have trained employees ready to help if something happens. No matter where you are, there’s someone nearby who knows what to do.
When should you call First Aid?
If you get hurt or start feeling unwell and it’s not a major medical emergency, that’s a good time to call First Aid. Things like sprains, small cuts, bruises or insect bites are all situations they can help with. They’ll take care of you on the spot or, if needed, recommend that you see a doctor for further treatment.
That said, First Aid isn’t meant for every health concern. If you’ve caught a cold or the flu, for example, First Aid can’t do much — it’s better to visit a clinic or see your doctor instead.
When not to call First Aid
First Aid and Campus Security are there to help, but they’re not a replacement for emergency services. If something serious happens, like a heart attack, a bad fall, exposure to hazardous materials or someone losing consciousness, you should call 911 first. Once help is on the way, then call Campus Security at 250-740-6512.
If Campus Security gets there before the ambulance or fire department, they’ll stay with you and provide support until emergency responders arrive.
Cold and flu season reminder
As we move into cold and flu season, it’s important to take care of yourself and help prevent the spread of illness around campus. If you’re feeling sick, stay home and rest. Wash your hands often and remember to cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze. Small actions like these make a big difference in keeping everyone at VIU healthy.
