From financial stress to full focus

How scholarships are powering future nurse Christina Gustafsson

As the recipient of seven awards and bursaries, Christina Gustafsson knows firsthand the difference they make in a student’s post-secondary journey and success.

The fourth-year VIU Nursing student says not having to worry about how she will pay for her schooling gives her the opportunity to focus fully on her learning and skill development without the added stress of finances – something she’s particularly thankful for this term as she completes her final clinical training requirement.

“I am working in the hospital full-time without compensation,” she says. “Having this support means I will have more time to study and consolidate my nursing skills as I prepare to enter the profession as a new graduate nurse. Awards such as these are what allow me to put more time and energy toward being the best nurse I can be."

Originally from Calgary, Christina was drawn to VIU for its small class sizes, one-on-one instructor support and extensive clinical hours.

“VIU gave me the hands-on experience I needed to explore different areas of nursing and decide where I want to work after I graduate,” she says.

A highlight of her VIU experience is getting involved in leadership roles. Christina has served as the BC Nurses’ Union Student Liaison for her class and as Vice-President of the VIU Nursing Student Network.

“These roles have allowed me to connect with peers across all years and programs, and even with nurses and students across Canada," she says. "It’s been amazing to contribute to building a stronger community among future health-care workers."

Christina credits VIU’s support services for helping her succeed. Accessibility Services connected her with funding, equipment and testing resources that made her studies more manageable.

I didn’t learn about these supports until my second year, so now I try to encourage other students to access them early,” she says.

Looking ahead, Christina is focused on finishing additional specialty training in critical care. After she graduates, she will start work as a nurse in the Intensive Care Unit at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.

For current or future VIU students, Christina simply advises them to seek opportunities. “There are many ways to get involved at VIU and taking advantage of them early can really enhance your student experience and help you build meaningful connections during your studies," she says.

She's also thankful to the donors who make scholarships and bursaries possible to help her and other students with post-secondary costs: “Your support gives me the opportunity to focus on my education and my future career. It truly makes a difference.”
