Biggest Lugers earn medals, Poker Walk challenge is next

March 23, 2010 - 8:13am

The 22

members of CCSensationals earned chocolate gold medals as winners of Campus

Recreation’s Biggest Luger program.

The six-week activity and nutrition-tracking program

encouraged Vancouver Island University students and staff to compete by logging

activity minutes and servings of fruit and vegetables. Based on their

performance, competitors moved sleds down a model track installed in the VIU

gym.

Olympian Meaghan Simister came to VIU to talk about her

recent experiences at the Winter Games and to present awards to competitors on

campus.

The

CCSensationals crossed the finish line on the Biggest Luger track with an

accumulated total of 1,000 hours of fitness activity and 5,000 servings of

fruits and vegetables. Team Hematocrit took silver and Team Cheerios earned

bronze. The Bannock Butt Lugers won team spirit honours. Aside from their

edible medals, CCSenationals

won a catered lunch for their team and Team Hematocrit and Cheerios won gift

certificates to Delicado’s Restaurant.

The

Biggest Luger competition attracted 85 participants in eight teams. The

activity total for all participants amounted to the equivalent of three months

non-stop exercise. The tally of 10,750 servings of fruits and vegetables amounts

to more than 535 kilograms or eight wheelbarrows filled with fruits and

vegetables.

VIU

President Ralph Nilson and Karen Alden, Fitness and Lifestyle Technician for

Campus Recreation, joined Simister at the awards ceremony.

“Campus

Recreation does an excellent job of creating challenging and fun ways to

promote healthier lifestyles. Exercise and good eating habits are important for

all of us,” Nilson said.

Campus Recreation has a new challenge to promote well-being.

The Presidential Poker Walk

will be held 12:15-12:45 pm,Thursday, April 1. Teams  start at the gym, and  receive five cards. Members walk to five

different locations on campus and opt to change one card per station. The team

with the best hand at the ends wins.

This event

is more than an activity break on campus. Competitors are encouraged to raise

funds for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC and Yukon.  Participants

can sign up online at www.heartandstroke.ca,

(Click on  VIU Poker Walk under Fit for Hearts Events) or email anira.anderson@viu.ca or karen.alden@viu.ca   for
