Batter up!…Malaspina Mariner baseball becomes reality

January 14, 2001 - 4:00pm

Malaspina University-College Mariner Athletics has added baseball to its roster as a result of a partnership agreement with the Island Baseball Institute establishing a "varsity club" baseball team to play under the Mariner banner.

Malaspina Mariner baseball will compete in the B.C. Colleges' Baseball League and run an extensive exhibition schedule in B.C. and Washington State. Actually this is the second season of competition and the Mariner squad (previously competing as the IBI Pioneers) will start their "official" Mariner status as defending Provincial Champions during the year 2001.

"Baseball is a great addition to Mariner Athletics," said Rick Bevis, Malaspina's athletic director. "This will allow Canadian students to get an excellent, reasonably priced education while training and playing some extremely competitive baseball right here at home."

Doug Rogers, Mariner baseball club's head coach, said, "We're excited about being associated with the long, successful Mariner tradition and will strive to carry on that record in baseball. We hope the student body and the community will support and join us for home games in Serauxman Stadium, one of the finest amateur facilities in the country."

The Mariner baseball schedule starts in early March. See the Mariner website at:
