Students living in Cowichan Valley or the surrounding area have more options for studying close to home.
Malaspina University-College will once again offer first year courses in the popular Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree program at the Cowichan campus in September 2008.
“We offered first year of the BBA program in 2006 and it was highly successful," said Maria Lauridsen, Cowichan campus principal. "In our educational planning process, we determined that business programs continue to be in high demand, so we'll offer first year BBA courses in September 2008 for the convenience of students living in the Cowichan Valley and surrounding areas. As we plan for our relocation to Cowichan Place, we’ll explore ways to expand local business programs even more.”
First year BBA courses include Accounting, English, Finance, Management, Marketing, and Quantitative Methods.
Students like Ashley Van Jaarsveld, who graduated from Cowichan Secondary School in June 2006, can vouch for the benefits of being able to study close to home. She enrolled in first year BBA courses at Malaspina when they were first offered at the Cowichan campus in September 2006.
“I picked the BBA program because business people are always in demand and I have always known that I’m going to be an accountant,” she explained. “I never would have attended Malaspina if they didn't offer the first-year of the BBA program locally. I was able to live at home and save money on moving and commuting costs. I could also keep my job while going to school.”
Van Jaarsveld said classes at the Cowichan campus were small and personable, making it easy to get to know fellow students and make friends.
Now enrolled in the second-year of the BBA program, Van Jaarsveld commutes to the Nanaimo campus for most of her classes. Her goal is to graduate with an accounting degree by December 2010 and eventually obtain a Certified Chartered Accountant designation.
Mike Mann, dean of management programs, said Malaspina is pleased to once again offer the first year of the BBA degree program in Cowichan.
“There’s a growing number students in this area, and we’re happy to help them start their degree studies closer to home,” Mann said.
Students in the BBA degree program can specialize in Economics, Financial Services, Accounting, International Business, Human Resource Management, Marketing and Management.
Applications are now being accepted for first-year courses starting in September 2008. To find out more, call (250)746-3509 or visit the website at www.viu.ca/management.
